When many people think of Africa, they think of tribal music and costumes, and perhaps the many animals that roam the continent. What they may not think of, however, is oppression, dictatorship, and revolution. That is the case with the Southern African country of Zimbabwe, a land, that for its 37 years of existence has only ever had one ruler, Robert Mugabe. He has been making many foolish and dictatorial decisions in the nearly 4 decades of his control. In 1982, he sent an army to crush his main political rival and left thousands dead, many of whom were just civilians. In 2000, he supported the mass seizing of white-owned farms, which in turn caused a food crisis overnight. He has cheated and bribed his way into winning elections by rigging votes and ordering attacks on potential rivals and their supporters. He and his wife Grace Mugabe wantonly spend money when they feel like it, while the majority of their country is below the poverty line. The final straw is that Grace Mugabe has convinced her husband to fire his current vice president, Emmerson Mnangagwa, possibly to attempt to take the position for herself, so that she may become president when her husband dies. This is a republic, not a monarchy where the “next in line for the throne,” takes over after the death of the previous ruler. Clearly, the military thinks the same, as they have taken over the capital and set President Mugabe under house arrest. They are demanding that he resign from office, and we must support them, otherwise, we will never see change. The people of Zimbabwe are suffering, and now we have an opportunity to be free from his terrible regime. Join the revolution, and speak out against Robert Mugabe!
